20-Layer Topographic System

Built from real NASA ETOPO1 bathymetry and elevation data, this 20-layer system captures the full vertical range of Earth. Ocean floors are recessed, continental shelves transition smoothly, and mountain ranges physically rise from the surface. The result is a museum-quality 3D relief sculpture of the entire planet.

Layers 1-5Deep ocean floor (abyssal plains, mid-ocean ridges)
Layers 6-10Continental shelves and shallow seas
Layers 11-14Coastal lowlands, river valleys, plains
Layers 15-17Plateaus, foothills, mid-elevation terrain
Layers 18-20Mountain ranges, peaks (Himalayas, Andes, Rockies)

Assembly Features

  • Asymmetric dowel pin holes on every layer for foolproof alignment
  • Registration notch at 12 o'clock for quick orientation
  • Ghost outline of the next layer engraved on each piece
  • Color-coded assembly guide SVG showing all 20 layers overlaid
  • info.txt with elevation thresholds, material specs, and step-by-step instructions
Included

Classic 2-Layer System

Prefer the elegant flat look? The bundle also includes the classic 2-layer files — perfect for a cleaner, faster build.

  • Layer 1 (The Continents): Cut from a dark veneer. Internal country borders are scored, with collision-free typography for flawless legibility.
  • Layer 2 (The Backboard): A massive rounded rectangle with oceanic typography (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian) and an equatorial scale bar.

Mount the backboard to the wall first, then attach the continental pieces on top with wood glue or double-sided mounting tape for the raised 3D effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 20-layer system work?+
Each of the 20 SVG layers represents an elevation band derived from real NASA ETOPO bathymetry and topography data. You cut each layer from thin material (1/16" chipboard or 1/8" plywood), then stack and glue them to create a physical 3D relief of the entire Earth — ocean trenches sink down, mountain ranges rise up.
How large is the finished map?+
The files are vector-based and scale to any size. Most builders aim for 36 to 60 inches wide for a dramatic wall installation. At 48" wide, the stacked relief stands about 1.25" tall — an incredible visual effect.
What material should I use?+
For the full 20-layer build, we recommend 1/16" (1.6mm) chipboard or MDF for clean stacking. For a simpler 2-layer version (included), use 1/8" or 1/4" Baltic birch plywood or walnut veneer for a premium look.
Is the simplified 2-layer version still included?+
Yes. The bundle includes both the full 20-layer topographic system AND the classic 2-layer system (Continental Outlines + Ocean Backboard) for builders who want the elegant flat look with raised continents.
Do I need to assemble 195 individual country pieces?+
No. Our files mathematically dissolve internal borders, grouping countries into massive solid continental slabs. The typography layer uses collision-physics to ensure all country and ocean labels are legible without overlapping.
Can I sell physical maps made from this file?+
Yes, with the Commercial License ($129). Physical 3D topographic world maps routinely sell for $500 to $1,500+ depending on size and materials. This is one of the highest ROI files in our entire catalog.
