2-Layer System

How It's Built

  • Layer 1 — The Continents: Cut from light plywood or veneer. Internal country borders are scored (not cut through), so each continent lifts off the bed as one solid slab. Country labels use collision-physics layout for flawless legibility at any scale.
  • Layer 2 — The Backboard: A massive rounded rectangle cut from a dark, contrasting material, carrying oceanic typography (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian) and an equatorial scale bar.

Mount the backboard to the wall first, then attach the continental pieces on top with wood glue or spacers for the raised, floating 3D shadow effect. Two cuts from two materials — no tiny pieces, no multi-week build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is in the download?+
Three SVG files: Layer 1 (all continents as solid pieces, with country borders as score lines and country labels), Layer 2 (the ocean backboard with ocean names and an equatorial scale bar), and a combined preview showing exactly how the two layers align.
How does the layered 3D effect work?+
You cut the two layers from contrasting materials — we recommend 1/8" Baltic birch for the continents and 1/4" walnut or dark-stained ply for the backboard — then mount the continental pieces on top of the backboard with wood glue, double-sided tape, or small spacers for a floating shadow effect. Two cuts, one afternoon, museum-wall presence.
How large is the finished map?+
The files are vector-based and scale to any size. Most builders aim for 36 to 60 inches wide for a dramatic wall installation; the layered mounting reads beautifully at any scale.
Do I need to assemble 195 individual country pieces?+
No. The files mathematically dissolve internal borders, grouping countries into solid continental slabs — country borders are scored onto the surface, not cut through. The typography uses collision-physics layout so all country and ocean labels stay legible without overlapping.
Can I sell physical maps made from this file?+
Yes, with the Commercial License ($129). Physical layered world maps routinely sell for $300 to $500+ depending on size and materials, so the license pays for itself on the first sale.
