How the world map is built

  • Continents: each continent or large island is one cut piece, with country borders and names engraved on it instead of hundreds of loose country cutouts.
  • Backer: a rounded board with the engraved title, a 30-degree graticule, ocean names, the small islands, and an outline showing where each continent glues down.
  • Spacer (optional): the continent shapes 4 mm smaller all round, hidden behind the pieces to float them with a shadow line.
  • One-piece version: everything engraved on a single board, which also prints as flat world-map wall art.

Robinson projection, with Antarctica left out so the land fills the board. Pieces too small to cut cleanly at a given size are engraved on the backer instead, and country names appear only where they fit inside their country at a readable size.

How does the layered effect work?+
Cut the backer from a dark or stained wood and the continents from a light one. The backer has an engraved outline showing exactly where each continent goes; glue the pieces on it, with the optional spacer behind them for a floating shadow line.
Do I need to assemble every country separately?+
No. Each continent or large island is one cut piece, and the country borders inside it are engraved. Shared borders are never cut twice. Islands too small to cut and glue by hand are engraved on the backer instead, so they are still on the map.
Why do the smaller sizes show fewer country names?+
A name is placed only where the whole name fits inside its country and would engrave at 1.8 mm or taller. Larger boards have room for more names, so 16x20 carries the most. Nothing is shrunk to an unreadable size.
What does the commercial license allow?+
It allows unlimited physical products made from the files, including printed maps and layered laser-cut pieces. It does not permit resale or redistribution of the digital SVG files.
