Celtic Knot Generator

Choose a knot pattern, set how many cells across and up and how big each cell is, and the studio draws the knotwork at real-world scale, with every strand passing over and under in turn. Export the interlace to engrave, cut the knot out as a single piece, or take the plain strand lines. Set one row of cells for a border, or more rows for a panel.

Celtic knots are part of Ornament Studio, so the same fabrication checks apply: your kerf, minimum bridge and sheet size are checked live. Designing is free; the $29 unlock covers every export in both.

Quick start

How to make a Celtic knot

Everything below runs in the studio above; the preview and fabrication checks update as you go.

  1. Choose a pattern

Start with Carpet page or Crosses for a classic panel, Plait for a simple weave, or Random for a symmetric knot drawn from the random seed.

  2. Size it

Set the cells across and up, and the cell size. One or two rows make a border; a square of cells makes a panel.

  3. Set the strand width

Ribbon width is the width of each strand. Keep it comfortably above your material’s minimum bridge for a cut-out.

  4. Pick the output

Interlace for engraving the over-under weave, Cut lattice for a one-piece cut-out knot, Score for the strand centrelines.

  5. Export

Check the status bar reads Export-safe, then download SVG or DXF for LightBurn and RDWorks.

Before the full cut: Cut the free Calibration square first to make sure your software imports the file at the right size.

Knot patterns included

Plait

The unbroken diagonal plait that every knot starts from, its strands turning back at the panel’s edges.

Chain

Short breaks in vertical runs pinch the plait into columns of linked chain loops.

Rings

Short crosswise breaks on a sparse grid, each closing the plait into a ring.

Crosses

Breaks on two diagonals of every block turn the strands into interlaced crosses.

Carpet page

Both kinds of break on offset grids, in the manner of the panels on an insular carpet page.

Random

Breaks chosen by the random seed, at the density you set, repeated by mirror or rotation symmetry. Change the seed for another knot; a small, highly symmetric panel has fewer to choose from.

FAQ

How are Celtic knots constructed?

Most Celtic knotwork can be drawn as a plait with breaks. Start from a regular diagonal plait, where strands cross over and under at every grid point, then add breaks: short walls that stop two strands crossing and turn them back instead. George Bain set out the methods in Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction (1951), and mathematicians have since formalised the same plait-and-break rules. This generator draws knots exactly that way, on a square grid you size yourself.

Is it one continuous strand?

Sometimes. The strands readout under the pattern settings counts how many separate loops the knot has; 1 means a single endless strand, the traditional ideal. Changing the number of cells or the breaks changes the count. A one-row border, for example, is always a single strand, however long.

Can I laser cut a Celtic knot out?

Yes. The Cut lattice view turns the strands into ribbons and cuts out the spaces between them, leaving the knot as one piece with its own outline as the edge. Every pattern is checked so its strands all cross one another; a loop that crossed nothing would fall out of the sheet, so the generator never leaves one. Ribbon width sets how wide the strands are.

What is the best way to engrave one?

Use the Interlace view. It draws both edges of every strand, broken where a strand passes under another, so the over-under weave reads clearly. The ribbon edges export on the score layer and the small weave marks on their own engrave layer, so you can run them at different power.

Is it free?

Designing and previewing are free, and so is the calibration square for checking import scale. A one-time $29 purchase unlocks the SVG and DXF exports. It is the same unlock as Ornament Studio, so if you already own it, Celtic knot exports are included.
